Company Background 
McKissack & McKissack the oldest black-owned Female operated construction company in the United States has been hired to build new terminals at JFK and Laguardia Airports. For over 100 years this family owned business has been a leader in over 6,000 projects. They provide a wide range of services to government agencies, municipalities, private institutions, industries, and designer/developers. In 1905 Moses McKissack, a former slave founded the family business after learning the trade of making bricks.

Cheryl McKissack Daniel Who is the president and CEO of the company credits the company’s success to “affirmative action.” CEO states “People do business with people who look like them. All the work we done outside of New York, didn’t matter In New York.”

61% of the companies employees are minorities and 34% are women. With her leadership their construction and design firm has been making a mark on some of the major landmarks in the nation. McKissack hopes her story will inspire other women of color.
